first, as has been mentioned by everyone, you should create a user other
than root to do most of your work with and then if you need root
priviliges you can just <su root> and get the work done.  having said
that, i didn't do it myself until i actually had everything up and
running perfectly, so i understand that it is easier to get everything
configured first as root (even if it isn't very wise).

second, i enclosed what i think are the relevant lines from your file. 
where it says fvwm above, just change to kde.  this is what i did and it
worked for me.
