My first suggestion: Don't use the 300MHz machine as your
gateway. I
use a 486dx2/66, and it keeps up just fine as a gateway, web
server,
and firewall.
In my experience, the cable modem is about 10-20x faster
than
a 33.6 modem, and gets real slow the further you get from
the
server your are using. In Hawaii, we have an OC3 line to
Atlanta,
which makes RedHat real quick to download, but if I go to
a site in Poland, it's dog slow.

Don't use the gateway as a file server, either.

I mostly use LinkSys NICs. I have three 3Coms, and they
work fine.
At the school where I'm teaching Linux, three of the 21
computers won't talk to the network (they worked in
Windows).
I like LinkSys because you can turn off Plug and Pray, and
they cost
about US$20 for the ISA cards and US$35 for the PCI cards.
