Please see http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#q_6_13.

I believe when the keyboard and screen are not connected, unlike with a
PC-hardware, the SUN disables the corresponding hardware, and the Linux
devices cannot be used (e.g. by getty).

I once tried the following to not have to modify inittab whenever I
connected or disconnected the keyboard and screen:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1 || sleep 36000

The idea was that if no keyboard were connected, the mingetty would fail,
and the sleep would be executed for the indicated long time (ideally longer
than time until next reboot, to avoid respawning and appropriate error
message). If there were a keyboard connected, the mingetty would be
successful, the sleep would not be executed.

A drawback of that was of course that you always have a sleep process
running, which is quite useless (mingetty at least provides some service).
But anyway, it didn't work as expected, as what I thought was an OR did not
work as I expected: even when mingetty exited after logging out from the
console (which should have returned a positive return code, but I didn't
check that), sleep would still be called, effectively preventing any further
logins to that console.

I did not investigate this any further, as it was not important to me any
longer.

Best regards,
Joachim
