The "Error reading kernel symbols" is usually the result of the System.map
file not being available in the /boot directory with the kernel. I believe
there's a naming convention for it too but I'm not sure what that is! Most
of the time, I save my System.map with a suffix matching my vmlinux file.
But one of my last compiles gave the same error reading symbols error at
bootup. I had problems with the kernel when using that one.

You're building the support for the Promise controller into the kernel
correct? Can't do it as a module since you need to get to the root partition
to get the module, and to get to the root partition, you'd need the Promise
card module, ..... chicken & the egg kind of thing. ;)

May not really be a problem with nfs system. Appears your system is having
trouble just getting booted with the new kernel, correct? Parts of nfs
system are compiled into the kernel (yes?) so there may be something you
must update in your nfs package. I'm NO expert with nfs filesystem.....I'm a
Samba junkie :-)
