first of all the disks should have a "sun disk label", looks like a partition containing the whole disk from cyl. 0 ... end and is usually partition 3. you can create them with fdisk. besides this i installed with text NOT graphical yast, because it seems that 7.3 is not able to format the partitions under gui (7.0 worked fine, also with gui yast). after installing silo there are three (? cant remember exactly) more options: create openboot label linux write bootdevice to nvram (or something else). i checked both and it worked. maybe the sun beauty try to boot from the wrong disk (if there is more than one) with the wrong operating system ... i installed suse 7.3 on one and aurora on the second disk. so i am able to boot both with boot disk1 (suse) or boot disk3 (aurora) from openboot prompt. besides this i used the suggested partition(sizes) from suse yast. hopefully this helps a little bit. greetings LG

All, I tried to install Suse sparc 7.3 on my sparc 5/170/72MB. The follwing happens:
1. Booting from CD: OK. 2. Partitioning, sometimes fails ("not able to partition disk") 3. If partiiotning is succesful then installing packages starts, after filling out some questions. 4. Installing silo: OK. 5. Rebooting fails: "Boot disk contains bad executable" or something similar.
Regarding point 5. Does anybody understand why this is happening?
Apart from this all, it seems that after you booted from CD you need to eject it; later on in the installation it does not recognise the CD already being mounted and keeps on asking "insert CD1".
Any briljant ideas?

yesterday i tried suse 7.3 on my sparc 5/170/32 mb. and it worked!! i was able to partition my disks, the bootloader was written, the prom bootdevice was modified. incredible. the beast booted and worked. now i will try to find more memory. i know about the 5/170 but i would like to have this thing as my personal workstation at home for writing and surfing. nothing else. i am deeply regret that suse has canceled sparc linux, although i understand this step (because developing and managing is really expensive). on the other side there are many folks who would like to give a new life to good old things. greetings Gert Lettner
