Alright, here is the results of my experimentations:
- the overlapping idea did not give me much joy. Making two grey squares 
overlap does indeed produce a darker line where the two squares overlap. So, 
that's a no go in my specific case
- The opacity grouping works perfectly well, that was the good tip. Sadely, FF 
is not handling opacity too well yet, and that gives very long processing 
times before the whole thing actually gets displayed. Since opacity is not 
vital in my app (would have been nice, but not vital), I'll just drop opacity 
untill FF2.0.
