Of course! I had somehow got it into my head that patterns automatically expanded to contain all content inside them. Thanks Erik. The new one http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/triangles6.svg Is much simpler than the one involving the tiling via script. I think it runs smoother as well and I think you're right about relative efficiency probably improving as the number of tiles increases.
