cleanups from reading the crypto helper code
- wrapping our own macro bodies in do { } while (0)
is more obscure than useful. Braces will do.
- added comments to show which functions were executed
within a helper thread and which might be and so
should be re-entrant. Likely missed some!
- reformatted some monstrosities
- added some explanations
- renamed some functions to make their purpose manifest
