Maybe time to re-open the "bid once, bid max" conversation we had on the mailing list two years ago?
These days there is a definite advantage to bidding a bit earlier (though not as early as possible). I'm thinking more of a last-day thing, far enough toward the end to avoid the watchers, lowballers and nibblers, but far enough back to dodge last-minute crashes. But given a stable eBay server again(remember those days?), sniping would still be the most advantageous strategy.
So it sounds like sniping about 10-30 minutes before the end is the best of both worlds -- get your max bid in late to avoid watchers, but early enough to ensure it gets into the system.

A couple of years ago I would've said Sunday night. But now, with eBay's environment deteriorating? And the increased activity on Sunday PM? I'd say anytime BUT.
Early Saturday or Sunday afternoon might be good. I figure most serious collectors will find the auction in advance, and just set up automated sniping. No point in being there if you don't have to.
