I thought of the anti-vir and plugins, but so far not a lot of success. I disabled Avast; no difference. No pop-up blockers but I was surprised to see so many plugins for things like Real Player that I never use! I'll remove many of them and retest.
In further trials it actually looks like the problem goes away if I open ANY page in Firefox, wait at least five seconds, then go to a page with the player on it. I'm also suspecting that since the problem doesn't reliably occur with every single Flash player I've tested it might be a combination of Firefox and extensions, and Flash 8/AS2 compiled apps. I might test with the trial version of CS4 to see if the same thing happens with the same simple test app I created.
