Okay another step forwards, thanks again Chris!

Now I'm getting another error checking the C compiler:

configure:3135: i386-mingw32msvc-gcc --version >&5
./configure: line 3137: i386-mingw32msvc-gcc: command not found

which I would guess is telling me exactly what I need to know... I'm just
not sure what I need to do about it :S

I have gcc-mingw32 installed (via Ubuntu software centre) but I'm thinking
there is something else/different I need. Any suggestions?
