Further upgrade in ADSL performance
Swisscom Fixnet has further increased the net bandwidths and
transmission rates available to ADSL customers. The net bandwidth for
customers is now just 15% below the gross value (e.g. 220 kbit/s out of
256 kbit/s). The difference from the gross value is due to increased
security provided to customers on the network. The increase in
performance is set to continue: the gross and net values will be
equivalent by the autumn of 2003. All customers have the option of
measuring the performance for themselves via the Internet
(www.enter-adsl.ch).
Broadband Internet access is currently experiencing a major boom. ADSL
technology and television cable access are competing neck and neck in
the fight for customers.
High security entails higher bandwidth all customers can measure
performance
Unlike other technologies, ADSL lines provide the customer with a
dedicated and thus more secure connection to the Internet. The high
level of security takes up part of the bandwidth (i.e. transmission
rate). Following a further performance upgrade, the net bandwidth
available to customers will match the gross bandwidth communicated in
the offering (e.g. 256 kbit/s) while maintaining the same level of security.
An online measuring tool is already available for ADSL customers at
www.enter-adsl.ch, and can be used at all times to measure the
performance on the customer's own line.
Persistent supply bottlenecks for ADSL hardware in Europe
Supply bottlenecks continue to exist throughout Europe for ADSL
hardware. One third of new ADSL customers are connected promptly, while
around two thirds have to wait for over four weeks. In exceptional cases
the waiting time is even longer. This unsatisfactory situation is also a
consequence of the booming demand for ADSL internationally. The number
of customers in Switzerland is five times higher in comparison to last year.
