Well, I think many of the pirates who come to the Fest may feel they do have some things in common philosophically and even operationally with hackers. Alan Weiner, one of the most notable radio pirates and a past attendee of the FEST has appeared at HOPE. I also don't see that Ed was promoting HOPE as much as he was alluding to his experience and expertise in helping to stage the event. Again, their FAQ contains a broader definition of hacking than you allude to.
