Dan, thanks for facilitating an alternative to Facebook for the
SWLfest group. Personally, I think choosing between the social
networking platforms Facebook and Google+ is like choosing between
the devil and the deep blue sea (of data.)
I never established a Facebook account because I never trusted its
founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg--who once wrote that people who
entrusted their personal data to his social networking platform are
"Dumb fucks."

Seven years ago Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange (who I dislike
personally) was interviewed by RT and quoted saying, "Facebook in
particular is the most appalling spying machine that has ever been
invented." He said, "Here we have the world's most comprehensive
database about people, their relationships, their names, their
addresses, their locations and the communications with each other,
their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all accessible
to U.S. intelligence. Facebook, Google, Yahoo -- all these major U.S.
organizations have built-in interfaces for U.S. intelligence. It's
not a matter of serving a subpoena. They have an interface that they
have developed for U.S. intelligence to
use."

Frankly, I don't trust Alphabet (Google+) much more, so I never
established a Google+ account, either. They have similar-data
sharing arrangements with demonstrably untrustworthy entities, and
market forces compel these corporations to exploit users' personal
data because they have a legal mandate to maximize profits for
shareholders. People can choose to decline these corporations'
onerous Terms of Service--which frequently change and aren't honored anyway.
I prefer using this SWLfest mailing list and email to exchange info
with my fellow SWLfesters. It's much safer ;-)

As more folks have become uncomfortable about the use of Facebook, in
light of the Cambridge Analytica story, I've created a shadow group for
us over on Google +. Consider it an experiment to see if we can gain
enough critical mass on an alternative platform...
Facebook and Google + address privacy a bit differently. If you want
to try it, here is the URL to join the group:
