Philo Agora's talk next Tuesday Tuesday, July 22 will be Prof
James Franklin: The Philosophy of Mathematics (and Infinity).
Philosophers have been fascinated by mathematics because it is the
gold standard of knowledge - it's proved correct and stays that way.
But what is it actually about - if biology is about life, what
aspects of the world does mathematics study? Maybe it's just a
language or method? The talk gives a realist view of mathematics as
about a real subject matter, with examples
from two areas: symmetry and infinity.
Jim Franklin is a professor in mathematics at the University of NSW.
He is involved in the Restraint Project, a study of the virtue of
self-restraint funded by the Australian
Tuesday July 22. at the Fair Trade Coffee House, 33 Glebe Point
