I'd prefer the first, I did not know that it's also Riemann sum. Maybe you  
could even
omit the underscore.

If you make it more general you might need a more general name. Maybe
approximation(). You could even add Simpson's rule etc. :)

Maybe rather call it upper and lower instead of left and right.
