Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think rectangle rule is an approximation  
using
piecewise constant functions, trapez rule is an approximation using  
piecewise linear
functions and Simpson rule is an approximation using quadratic functions.

So "approximation" would not be too general in my opinion. All the rules  
share the
fact being an approximation of the surface between the function and the  
x-axis.
