Hmmm...this is not a quick fix. There are many things that depend on the  
present
behavior (e.g. logcombine puts a log-exclude on a variable but then  
actually tests
that variable to see if it matched a log term...with the broken nature of  
things it
*has* to but it really shouldn't have to (I think) if things were working  
properly).
If I do something like the following in symbol/matches things start to  
break:

         if pattern.exclude:
             for x in pattern.exclude:
                 if type(x) is Wild:
                     if x in expr:
                         return None
                 elif expr.has(x):
                     return None

I'm not sure of the best way to fix this.
