One way we could move forward on this is to replace all existing Muls with
`Mul(*args, auto=True)` and let that flag control the distribution step
*but the default would be False*. Then all code written after introducing
that flag could be written without the auto flag but written to do the
right thing without autodistribution. The places where the flag is used
could eventually all be removed.
