I had been successful in syncing both contacts and events with Kontact under KDE before. The only issue I had was incorrect timezones for events, which (IIRC) was due to a bug with Kontact. I haven't tried this in quite a few months, though, so I cannot speak with certainty about Kontact interoperability at the current moment. This is likely to be complicated by the Opensync 2 -> 3 transition.
The current sync procedure may be complicated in terms of software dependencies, but as far as I know, it works. The complexity is one thing that is currently being addressed by many people. Is there a particular step he is having issues with?
