Correct - I had used kdepim in the past and it worked fine (except for the timzeone issue). I have not actually tried syncing in quite a while, so I can't comment with complete accuracy on the current state since many things have changed (new releases of Kontact, code changes in sync-engine and our OpenSync plugin, code changes in OpenSync, transition process to OpenSync 3).
