Hi Clinton,

The basis for it has been somewhat close to that used on the DMOZ, "People
do a better job".

It's one thing to have a machine look at the technical bits and spit out an
answer. It's another to know a real person has done it, as well as looking
across the range of other things they're doing. Seeing that someone
recommended a feed is perhaps a bit more valuable than just knowing a spider
picked it up. Likewise knowing that someone caught that a feed was acting
up and offered to help is a lot better than some cron job spitting out
ceaseless nag-o-matic messages bugging you about it.

That said, the process does need refinement and we're working on better UI
tools. Most notably will be some 'action' buttons on the right sidebar
under the current validation button. Ones that will let you more quickly
mark a feed for repair, dead or approved. It'll also bring up a
questionnaire box when you mark one for repair instead of using just the
notes tab.

That and some more versatile reporting views. Being able to pick out feeds
based on similarities and the like.

Fundamentally the idea is that the participation of members of a community
can have more value than mechanized processing. It's not without it's
faults and backlogs are certainly one of them.
