Yes, it is better to do things step by step.
Let's first solve the GSoC applyment and after that talk about what does mean
and implies join to SFC.
In any case a deep instrospection discussion should be held by the current
Synfig active members.
Please don't take me wrong. We need to fully reply the following questions (or
other that can arise):
What's the porpose of Synfig Project?
Are we a non profit organization?
Do we need a formal direction structure?
What are our financial needs?
How can people join to the Project?
Which are the areas that are not properly covered currently?
Where do we really need help?
Which are the tasks that are needed to keep the Project alive?
Only after have discussed and replied those or more questions we can really
decide if the SFC is needed for us.
Please don't think I don't like join SFC, I just want us to think about it
before take any decision. Also reply those answers would make Synfif Project
more clearly visible and understandable by people that haven't get hooked with
it yet.
Sorry for the ranting moment :)
Regards
Carlos

Asunto: Re: [Synfig-devl] Software Freedom Conservancy
Hello,
I think we can wait until after gsoc projects are announced and after the
LGM-talks with our application to hopefully have those two as feathers in our
hat.
>
Agreed.
Also we need to define what we want from SFC membership.
>We need them to take care of finances and donations, but what else?
Is it desireable to have them as owners of everything Synfig?
Trademark, domain-name, etc.?
True.
First from the SFC web:
Similarly, any copyrights, trademarks, domain name or other assets transferred
to a project can also be held by the Conservancy on behalf of the project. A
significant service that the Conservancy provides its members is a vehicle
through which copyright ownership in the project can be unified. There are
several advantages to having a consolidated copyright structure, including that
it makes enforcement activity easier and more effective. However, copyright,
trademark, and domain name assignment is not a requirement in order to join the
Conservancy, rather, it is an option for those projects that ask for it
So any of this is a requirement to join the SFC. Just optional terms that we
can later discuss, and maybe only transfer them after joining, if we dicide
then so.
I don't think we need to transfer the copyright to the SFC.
Synfig is not a registered trademark so no worries there.
About the domain name:
The owner and every-year payer is still darco, if he doesn't want to do it any
more we could transfer it to the SFC, or to any other Synfig admin. (Still, the
SFC would either pay it themselves or derive that person money to pay for it).
About the infrastructure:
The web and forum are hosted in Zelgadis' server so maybe we can use donations
to pay him something too. (Maybe in donations to the morevna project :P)
The wiki is hosted in Tuxfamily.
The repository and bug tracker are hosted in Sourceforge.
I'd also remark that the SFC joining has no turn back, after joining, we can
part ways whenever we want, but the SFC can legally only transfer the assets to
another non-profit organization (no individuals).
But I don't know what would happen if we don't transfer anything and just use
them as financial back up, and then we part ways.
I can't see why we would want to part ways anyway, but still.
Also, if we join the SFC, they suggest we destinate a percentage (discussed
during sign up) of our donations to them (but they are also non-profit) as
payment for their services.
As I see it, joining the SFC doesn't need to change anything in our usual
procedures but in financial terms, where they would just take over the
donations administration and would transfer whoever money to whatever we need
(including even hiring some developer to improve some specific aspect).
