At a previous company, I wrote a pair of scripts that polled *stat data using rsh from a central server and put it into a CSV repository. A Perl script used GD to dynamically graph the requested data on demand and present it on a web page. Time was always tight, so exploring RRDtool's auto-expiry of data (as an example) never happened. I never did find any open source product that did what we needed, though I know a co-worker was looking at Nagios when I left. Of course, it all belongs to them, now, and I've not had time to rewrite it.
I found that every tool at the time just provided the framework, and needed to be heavily scripted and massaged. It was all "consultant ware." I'd love to see this data gathered using SNMP modules that are part of the (Open)Solaris/Nevada distributions. RRDtool may be useful for expiring old data automatically.
