Yes, it looks bad. Not a twitch. Not even the flicker of an eyelid.

But now we know that resurrection is possible. All you have to do is post to
the list. And after all my crowing about the commitment I had made to always
get things going again, it appears I've been seriously derelict in my duty.

Well, I do have a question that more experienced users of System 6 may be
able to answer:

What's the best compression/decompression utility to use on a compact Mac
running System 6? Best, that is, in the sense of compressing and
decompressing the greatest number of types of files.

I had been using Expander 3.5.2, but the same version of DropStuff with
Expander Enhancer needs System 7, apparently. I thought I'd outsmart it by
installing DSEE in my system folder, then trashing the extension folder it
resided in, so that the bare guts would be left in the System Folder -- on
the assumption, of course, that now System 6 would be able to recognize it.
But it didn't work.

So I concluded that some earlier version of SE/DSEE was needed, and went
looking. Now I'm trying out Stuffit Lite 3.6, and I like it. You have to do
your own hands-on decoding of a .sit.hqx file first and then decompress it
as a second step, but I like that. The whole thing has a much surer and more
robust feel to it. Only problem is the variety of files you can handle with
it seems limited.

Does anyone have any preferences of their own on this?

One final thought. We've talked earlier on this list of developing browsers
for System 6. It occurs to me that we might also look at developing much
simpler apps and utilities, too -- such as a decoding/encoding,
compression/decompression device that could handle a wider range of
(early!?) files for other platforms. Or is the consensus that such
development isn't necessary?
