What's the best compression/decompression utility to use on a compact Mac running System 6? Best, that is, in the sense of compressing and decompressing the greatest number of types of files.
I've had many frustrating experiences trying to juggle with the many versions of Stuffit. The thing is, there is an attractive power of the later Stuffit Deluxe 5.5, which makes archives that you can't deal with inside a 68000 mac environment with System 6. So these files innundate the old software/shareware collections out there, and whether we want it or not, we have to deal with them outside of System 6.
As for a compression format for System 6, I think Compact Pro is pretty much the one that you can count on working in it - what's more, that .cpt format didn't have the same staying power after System 7 ( though you can use the archiver and decompressor in System 7), so there wasn't enough momentum for them to develop a new version that wasn't compatible with the old one.
