o the book disk i made will not mount in OSX or OS 9, does that mean that it wasn't written properly?
Maybe. Do the disk images mount in OS 9 or X that you downloaded from Apple? As I said earlier, that's what I do - mount disks and images in OS X, and copy back & forth.
