Perhaps T-Mobile is the only US based operator that does this, but I
guarantee you that sending a message to notify for voicemail is the
much more common way to notify that you have voicemail deposits or at
least it is for GSM operators.  I've used GSM in Europe and in Asia and
both of those systems use SMS messages rather than a MWI.  Fido in
Canada uses messages rather than MWI as well.  I asked about this in
the UK mobile telecom group and was informed that most operators there
use SMS with messages rather than the MWI.  So the way that T-Mobile
has done it is in no way "odd."
