I believe you'll find that CDMA networks principally Verizon has a much
bigger footprint than even the "new and improved" cingular. GSM is far
better at covering areas in the US and Canada than two years ago when
the only GSM large scale network was VoiceStream/T-Mobile in the US and
it was only Microcell in Canada. Both Rogers and AT&T/cingular have
made great strides though I really do not believe that their networks
have the same coverage as CDMA/Verizon. I have personal experience
that when there's little to none coverage with T-Mobile/cingular/att
that there will be Verizon.

As far as choosing GSM instead of the hodge-podge of technologies we
have now in the US and Canada that's a result of no governmental
mandate to choose just one technology whereas in Europe it was
*mandated* that they implement GSM. GSM was originally a pan-European
standard and only later became a world-wide standard.
