That's pretty much only in areas that were formerly Omnipoint.   
VoiceStream used the mobile prefix with 9999 and I believe Powertel  
used another four digits (9000?) I'm not really sure.  Little by  
little these local access numbers are going away and the only way to  
check from a wireline phone is to either call that number and wait  
for it to roll to voicemail and use * to interrupt the outgoing  
message then enter the pass code.  Entering a # after the pass code  
will speed things up but it's not absolutely necessary since it will  
time out and go to the VM menu anyway without the #.
