Donna,

if both laptops run Windows (XP or beyond), can't you use one as a gateway
for the other? All you need is a  cheap ethernet router (wireless or wired)
to hook one laptop to the other, and set up "internet connection sharing" on
both laptops.

I haven't done this in ages, but there should be plenty of internet
resources available that describe how to do this.
