The bricked phones can be unbricked, its just Apple will not exchange the
phone.

The key is not updating till the development community clears it.  Also, at
this point, you can get a battery replaced for $45 (aftermarket), and as the
original OEM batteries start wearing out in quantity, things will get more
competitive. I plan on replacing mine myself, but I feel comfortable
soldering.
