I looked at the G1 also. I am in a 3G area. It was pretty good. I had my sidekick 3 (which sadly had a network outage for 3 days) but put them side by side. SK WAS slower.but not enough for me to spend the extra monthly cost for the G1.
Not sure if the sidekick LX's would be good for him. I also did not like the keypad on the G1. Reminded me of the early SK's with the rubber keys that eventually popped out. I would imagine anything you do with T mo..(or other carriers) will want a 2 year contract.
