A few CDMA phones can also work on GSM networks. The CDMA version of
the HTC Touch Pro2 was an example of that. The US CDMA carriers
sometimes sell these phones as 'world phones' but tend to block US GSM
frequencies in the devices.

With the CDMA Touch Pro2, phone enthusiasts figured out how to unlock
access to the US GSM frequencies. Doing so requires unlocking and
reflashing the phone. Google and xdadevelopers is your friend if you
want to know more. (The hardware is definitely capable of both GSM and
CDMA, most restrictions in place are due to carriers blocking the
devices from working to their full potential.)

(Whether you re-enable this capability may depend on whether you have a
need for it along with how you feel about device ownership. This is the
ownership and control debate...do you feel a device you bought and paid
for actually belongs to you and is something you can do with as you
please as long as it doesn't negatively affect other users? Or is the
device just a 'rented' communications network access device that you
have no right to modify? The jailbreaking of iPhones, iPads,
Playstations, and XBoxes to run custom software and add capabilities
raises very similar issues about device ownership and control.)
