I got a BlackBerry in 2009 when that was the only option for sending and
receiving email from a T-Mobile handset. I'm now considering an upgrade to
Android.

My T-Mobile bill contains a $25 line item for BlackBerry service. I assume that
covers the BlackBerry Messenger, and routing of all TCP traffic through RIM's
servers in Montreal (why?).

If I give up my BlackBerry, with which I have a love/hate relationship, and
substitute, say, a Samsung Galaxy S III, will there be a similar monthly
charge? Or will my new handset pay for itself in about a year?
