Card or tablet?. This subjects comes up regularly, almost like the sun
rising! But it has nothing to do with Danish words.
The original book on the subject was in German and called them
'Brettchen' which when an English book appeared was translated as
'tablet'.
The American weaver, Mary Atwater, came across the technique through van
Gennep and Jequier's great work which used the expression 'Tissage aux
Cartons'. She translated this as 'weaving with cards'.
So from this circumstance tablet has become the UK word, and card the US
word.
The story is a little more complicated than this but you can find it all
in my Techniques of Tablet Weaving.
