I'm sure that not everyone will agree w/ me on this, but I think the Card Weaver's Surfboard is an excellent loom for a new card weaver. Here's a link for it:

I have tried cardweaving on an inkle loom and don't really care for it. There just didn't seem to be as much room to move around as I wanted/needed.
