Around here (Massachusetts, USA), it is very common to assign numbers/codes to trail intersections - particularly in areas where trails are dense (such as nature reserves). Intersection numbers are typically posted on small signs at the actual intersections and included on local maps.

I've found very little on the subject (is this practice not used anywhere else?) One tagging scheme that seems to be use occasionally, though I'm not sure it's a perfect fit, is:

information=guidepost
name=... or ref=...

How would (or do) you tag such intersection markers?
