Around here (Massachusetts, USA), it is very common to assign numbers/codes to trail intersections - particularly in areas where trails are dense (such as nature reserves). Intersection numbers are typically posted on small signs at the actual intersections and included on local maps.

FYI, node numbering is the bright idea they use in Northern Belgium <http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=50.92&lon=5.167&zoom=11&layers=C> (Le plat pays) for their cycling network. As you can see <http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/352628173>, it's a rcn_ref <http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:rcn%20ref?uselang=fr> = 315 indeed. (regional cycling network) But as you can see too <http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Cycle_routes#Tagging_Cycle_Route_Networks>, rcn_ref is normally applied to ways.
Applying it to nodes is a national extension.
Probably only OCM supports it.

Hoping this post may guide you ;-)

André.
