There are several smartphone apps that build in drinking water capability: I helped develop one of them.
drinking_water=yes on a facility means that drinking water is available at that location, and implies potable. It's meant for the common cases such as where a toilet has a standard drinking water fountain associated with it. Generally toilets:disposal=flush and drinking_water=yes go together, but not always. It's also very useful as *drinking_water=no* to mark a place you might assume has water available, but in fact does not. For example an urban train station, mountain hut, or flush toilet without drinking water. I prefer the term *potable,* as it is far less ambiguous. There's exactly one meaning to that term, and it's easily looked up. But the potable concept has mapping complications: potable according to whom? Potable because it's shaped like a drinking fountain? Potable because a sign says it's potable Potable because local tradition says it's potable? The hard work here is defining what level of *promise * a tag of *potable*implies. Who certified it and when?
