Hi all, re: merging data Yup, everyone handled that question so i dont need too. .. However, i would recommend posting a summery onto the wiki as a FAQ... as this question comes up alot. And we do have a definitive answer.
Unfortunately, i tend to drag on and on and on and on.... so someone else (hopefully) can write it out nicely so it's clear as mud ;-) ... and on and on and on.... And BTW, im +1 for tackling the Nova Scotia Data next ... rather than BC... but of course, that script for getting the Stats Can data, sounds wonderful, and i'm looking forward to trying to understand it. ... fortunately i have a full plate trying to get this CanVec & geoBaseNHN data all organized. Is there some way to get around the FME issue? ... perhaps asking permission from the software creators to allow the sharing of the process for it. Otherwise, it will be just those people who have the software that can do it. ... which is fine, .... but it does put a lot of pressure on them (as know one else can help with the tweaking) So anyway, Here's what i got (to try to answer Jonathan's question about the approach) By working tile-by-tile with importing both the GeoBaseNHN & the CanVec data at the same time. (or maybe separately... but to keep the process smooth, going at it all at once make is better) The local mappers might want todo this; 1- working in area which have already been enhanced with the GeoBaseNRN, we now having something to go by. 2- 1st view each of the features separately... 1 .osm file at a time. (in JOSM) 3 - load the 'boundary region of the rectangle tile.. and load all the current OSM data (as a new layer) ... but remember hide it, just before uploading data :-) 4- use the 'hide/show' option to switch back and forth, and pan around the whole area to view where that feature (to be imported) is. .. and when you find possible overlaps ... contact that mapper who did that work, and decide which version you want to keep. 5 - do this for the whole area, and once your happy with it, then Upload. 6 - (before or after) all the other features are loaded... load eithor the GeoBaseNRN backup file or the canvec roads file... and have the file loaded as another layer. 7 - use the roads layer as a 'tracing paper' and view/hide all over the map and move the osm nodes & stretch the osm ways to line up how they should. 8 - by hiding the 'roads' layer, you can upload the OSM changes back to the OSM server, without duplicating the data. I hope this makes sense... perhaps someone else can explain what i mean better ;-) FYI: I feel that having 20 mappers all working at different parts of the country, all doing the same process.. it shouldn't take to long to get the whole country imported... and done with super careful work and great coordination. .... this is why i'm bugging people to try and get these charts PERFECT.. as we don't want to be 1/2 way through and find out that tags should be changed ;-) Cheers, Sam Vekemans Across Canada Trails _______________________________________________ Talk-ca mailing list [email protected] http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
