I much prefer that style in your screengrab. It clearly shows what is or isn't a motorway and I think it's almost universally accepted (In Europe at least), that motorways are shown in blue.
The current problem I see with the new default style is that it's very very difficult to now plan routes on a zoomed out map. I can't clearly see, for example, what is or isn't a motorway around Birmingham.
