The OSMF is not formally involved in the process, through the LWG or otherwise.
OpenStreetMap US is free to engage with law students to ask legal questions about OpenStreetMap, like any other organization. Of course, they need to be careful with the OpenStreetMap mark to make sure they're not implying the results or process is anything official.
