True, of course you've also got a loads slower processor to deal with. If you turn the monitor and hard drive off on a modern laptop, although all parts will stop moving, you'll still not get that kind of life anyway, because they run at a much faster clock speed. Granted, most of the modern laptops, such as Centrinos and Turions, are pretty efficient about things, and step the processor down when it's not in demand to save battery life. My HP does this, and I can get almost 8 hours of battery out of it with wireless and bluetooth on, when I'm not doing terribly much that requires a lot of clock cycles. I've got a gig of ram, and it didn't seem to matter about battery life when I upgraded the memory. I thought it would, but really, I haven't noticed a difference on any of the laptops I've upgraded as far as battery life is concerned. There are some laptops around that claim 14 hours of battery life with a monitor, which does kind of scare me... Of course, the more you do, the faster the clock speed and the less battery life you'll get, unless you clamp down on it and force it to always use a slower clock speed. Then there are the PDA/phone combos: they'll go for ages. If I were to put my phone in offline mode, and just use it for it's other functions, it'd probably run for a week with no charge. It gets about 3.5 days between charge with the phone bit on. Of course, that goes down loads when you start making and taking phone calls... If I could find a decent cymbian program that would let me read books without being interrupted by the screen saver, put placemarks in the text and have a decent search feature, that would be nice. I could just sort of plug headphones in and read all day, and not really worry about resources much. The problem with doing this with stock stuff is that, when the stupid screen saver comes on, I get thrownh all the way back to the top of the text, and it's really quite hard to find your place on such a tiny little keypad with no nice things like page up and page down, or easy ways to jump between paragraphs and such. . I guess this wouldn't happen for sited folks, since they'd be constantly scrolling down the screen, which of course Talks doesn't do when you issue a read command. But, because of it's size and longevity, it'd be great for doing this sort of thing... -- -- Patrick Perdue (MCP, CNA) KE4DYI Greensboro, NC website: http://www.pdaudio.net home: +1(828)221-2971 Mobile phone and SMS: +1(336)509-5583 e-mail and .net messenger: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -------------------- For anything related to the yamaha motif line of keyboards and modules, subscribe to the motif-help mailing list by sending a blank message to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This message originally sent in reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 6:21 AM EST.
