Greetings,
Yeah this is a perfect place for a lookup table.
If the codes are unique (which in your case they are) then a Collection
is a great thing to use:
This will load the Collection
In the Declaration section of a module put
Dim DenialCodes as new collection
Sub loadCodes
d.open codefile...
do until d.eof
denialcodes.Add d("Full Text"),d("Code")
d.next_
loop
Now here's the magic.
All you need do to retrieve the value (full text) is to use:
Enter DenialCodes(MyCode) ' here MyCode is what you were comparing
against the list in your Select statement.
That's because the Code from above becomes a key in the collection.
Regards,
Thom

Subject: [talkbws] RE: Whats better than Select Case?
That's pretty much what I have.
Here is a short list of ANSI (denial reason codes) with their truncated
descriptions and our Laymen terms.
5
Proc Code/TOB Inconsistent W/P
OP ICD-9 procedure listed on IP acct
13
Date of Death Preceeds Date of
Wrong discharge date entered
16
Claim lacks info for Adjudicat
Ins request info from provider or patient
22
Pmt Adj/May be cov by other pa
Primary insurance not listed
24
Pmt Adj/Chgs cov by Capitation
Charges included in contract rate
Right now I'm using Select Case to say if X=22 then y=Primary insurance
not listed etc... The problem is once I get a substantial list set up
I don't want a Select Case function with 200 different cases. It would
work, but seems like such a pain to set up. I've thought about another
detestation but I've already got three going.
As I run the reports and find ANSI codes I want to substitute the laymen
description instead of the ANSI description for the final output.
Thanks.
p.s. do you remember the name of that example on the BWS website?

Greetings,
I take it this is a situation where you have:
If val=x then b="Q"
If val=z then b="P"
And there's lots of them then your lookup file is good approach and
there's an example to do that on our website.
But would need some details about what you're doing to suggest a "best"
approach.

Thom

Anyone know if there is a better solution than Select Case? I thought
about using an answer file and looping for my If:then statements but am
not sure which would be better of there is an even better solution than
either the Case or answer files.
Thanks.
