In vb a select case statement is much more efficient than a series of If Then statements. You can create arrays in vb which should be slightly more efficient than select case if the program was running continuously for a considerable time. The difference would be negligible unless you had hundreds or thousands of values.
Both select case or an array is much more efficient that opening a text file and reading values from it. The main benefit of the text file, it is easier to maintain if values will be added, removed or changed on a regular basis. The difficulty with either select case or an array is that if values must be added, removed or changed the program must be updated and recompiled. Thus one must analyze will the values change often and if so who will maintain it, a programmer or end user? If they won't change often (or maybe even if they will) is program efficiency more important than ease of administration?
