Yes, it is possible, but it takes away literally every option for searching for anything. If you need it, though, it can be restarted the same way it was turned off.

Windows Search can be turned off by doing this:

Start > Control Panel  > Programs and features> Turn Windows Features On or
Off >.
You'll have to choose yes at the UAC prompt, then wait for the list of
features to populate. When it does, tab to the tree view and navigate down
to Windows Search and uncheck it.
Tab to OK and press Enter.

Some people like the search box, others are still comfortable with the feel
of Windows XP. Decide for yourself.
