Wondering which version of classic shell? Some time back, if I
remember, later versions, (before version 3), didn't speak well in
configuration?

Just install classic shell. This will give you more control over your start
menu. This includes where the search box is. For example I am running
windows 10. I am using classic shell. The search box is focused if I press
tab from the start menu. This means I see all of my menu options and the
search box is out of my way unless I want it buy tabbing over to it. This
gives you the best of both worlds.

if your going to turn it off, you may as well turn off indexing to save
performance, but only if you turn off windows search, because when your
searching for files the indexing service is needed

Yes, it is possible, but it takes away literally every option for
searching for anything. If you need it, though, it can be restarted
the same way it was turned off.

Hi, Dennis.
Windows Search can be turned off by doing this:
Start > Control Panel > Programs and features> Turn Windows Features
On or Off >.
You'll have to choose yes at the UAC prompt, then wait for the list
of features to populate. When it does, tab to the tree view and
navigate down to Windows Search and uncheck it.
Tab to OK and press Enter.
Some people like the search box, others are still comfortable with
the feel of Windows XP. Decide for yourself.
