w e can not read rtf files because this is a graphic format.
it has to be saved in txt or doc format before it can read them.

Well it sure doesn't work here, and I've checked set file associations,
and that is correct.
I did Take Net Bat's suggestion and just save the file to .txt rather
than .rtf, and as it opened up in Note Pad, I was then able to select
using the shift-arrow combination, and it worked like a charm, or at
least the way it is supposed too.

I've been trying to do this the standard way, by using the shift arrow keys,
but to no avail. At At first, I thought that WE 9.2 just refused to read the
selected text, but now I find that WP just doesn't carry out the process. I
am using WP to accomplish what I consider small tasks, like in this case,
keeping a listing of recommended books for a friend which includes
annotations, or maybe for future downloading from Bookshare and the like.
I know I could use MSWord, but I really don't wish to open up such a large
program for such off handed and small task. Just a hangup of mine I guess.
But if any one could please help me with this one I would really appreciate
it. This issue has been driving me a bit nuts for a while.
