Hi Linette, A text editor is a program like Notepad. You use them to edit plain text documents. Unlike word processors like Microsoft Word, they don't have fancy formatting options like headers, bold, underline, tables etc, etc. They are often targeted to programmers who need a different feature set than those offered by a word processor, but non programmers use them as well to write notes and other things that don't require fancy formatting. A text document can also be read by almost any other editor or word processor. You don't have to use the same program that was used to create the file.
